Digital Devices at GVGS

The Year 9 Netbook Programme

2012 was an exciting year for the implementation of a trial 1:1 Netbook programme at GVGS for all students in Year 9. The decision to engage in the Digital Education Revolution in this way was a direct response to the commitment that the school has always shown to the use of technology as an important part of life in education as well as the incentives provided by the Commonwealth government. Our students live in a world in which familiarity with technology, computing, and their connection to learning is expected and commonplace. As such, the implementation of a 1:1 computing programme was a natural requirement for maintaining educational relevance in the 21st century.

Individual access to digital devices makes it possible to bring greater learning power to individual students ‘anywhere anytime’ by accessing enhanced learning opportunities. While the Netbooks are owned by the school, student access to these devices, as if they were their own, means that students are completely familiar with their own computer, develop confidence in its use and maintenance and are able access learning materials when at home. Benefits of the 1:1 programme include learning which takes into account students’ individual learning styles, development of higher order thinking skills, use of web 2.0 tools, employment of advanced publication using the richest multimedia and access to the Moodle Learning Management system both in and beyond the school day.

To accompany the adoption of the Netbook programme, teachers have engaged in professional learning under the guidance of e Learning Coordinators and they continue to explore appropriate learning applications relevant to 21st century learning. A state of the art and school wide wireless network system also helps students to connect easily to the schools network and the IT department provides immediate on campus support.

Digital Devices Extended to Year 7 and 10 in 2013

Evaluation of the 2012 Netbook programme in July revealed strong support for students having access to their own digital devices and the contribution of this to student learning. Extension of the programme was therefore recommended to include Years 7 & 10 for 2013. In some subjects e-textbooks will be accessed and increasingly this will become a standard.

The same benefits that have been noted in the 1:1 Year 9 programme will be extended to Years 7 & 10 but the digital devices will remain only one tool in a rich educational repository of learning tools. It is important to note that the GVGS classroom is a blended learning environment and in addition to the ICT General Capability, we remain committed to all aspects of the Australian Curriculum.

Digital devices will remain the property of the school and students will be given an extended loan of one device for the academic school year once the User Loan Agreement is completed, signed and submitted at the start of the loan period.

Whole school implementation in 2014-15

All year levels will be included in the 1:1 digital device programme in 2014-2015. Continual development of the programme will ensure that digital devices remain relevant, up to date and devoted to the best pedagogical approaches in advancing student achievement.
