Music has always been an important element of the learning programme and the cultural life of the school. It is a rich and diverse component of the education at GVGS and we strive to promote an appreciation and love for music that will last for the rest of their lives. Music is a compulsory subject until Year 7. After this time Music is available as an option through to VCE level. The Year 5, 6 and 7 classroom Music Programme is both instrumental and performance based, with students learning a range of ensemble and orchestral instruments including flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, violin, viola and cello.
The Music School is based in the W B Hunter Music Centre which is a superb purpose-built facility. It is here where we run nearly 180 instrumental music lessons per week, 18 different musical ensembles and many large-scale concerts and intimate recitals. The Foundation Day Concert is the major event in the musical calendar.
Our Music Tutors are highly experienced teachers and fine performers in their own right. They aim to provide music tuition of the highest possible standard to all members of the GVGS Music Community. Where possible, all students learning an instrument play in an ensemble and these are formed in junior, intermediate and senior levels offering students a wide range of performance opportunities. It is within these rehearsals and performances where students develop a wonderful social dynamic, enhancing the growth of a strong music community.
